The City of Arlington has adopted Ordinance No. 2025-020 amending AMC Title 15 pertaining to Fire Sprinkler Systems, which went into effect on November 26, 2025. To verify if your project will require a fire sprinkler system, please complete the Fire Sprinkler Checklist

A permit is required before constructing or installing equipment under most circumstances. Always check with the Building Division prior to any work being done.

Current Exceptions Within the Codes

  • Residential one-story detached structures used as tool and storage sheds and similar uses, provided the floor area is not greater than 200 square feet.
  • Fences not over 7 feet.
  • Retaining walls that are not over 4 feet in height measured from the bottom of footing to top of wall, unless supporting a surcharge. 
  • Decks not exceeding 200 square feet in area, that are not more than 30 inches above grade at any point, are not attached to the dwelling, and do not serve the required exit door.
