Common Code Violations
There are different types of code violations within Arlington city limits. Please view the common code violations on this page to determine if Code Enforcement action is required for your complaint or issue. Contact the Community & Economic Development Department or the Code Enforcement Officer for questions regarding code violations.
Chickens and Roosters
Chickens may be kept within the city limits provided no more than seven hens, including chickens and chicks may be kept per single-family residential lot. No roosters are allowed.
Trees and Street Trees
The removal of trees within city limits is prohibited without obtaining approval and a permit prior to cutting or removal. Examples include street trees, trees on private property, and heritage trees. Contact the Community & Economic Development Department for further information.
Trash, Junk, and Debris
Garbage collection is mandatory for every household, apartment, dwelling, multi-unit residence, trailer court and industrial or commercial building through the City's contracted sold waste collector.
Signs
A sign permit must be obtained prior to the erection of new or substantial alteration of existing signs. No signs shall be placed in the public right-of-way unless otherwise allowed by ordinance.
Property Maintenance
All properties shall be maintained so as to not create a public nuisance. This would include maintaining vegetation, no accumulation of junk vehicles, building materials, furniture, appliances, trash or rubbish.
Encroachment Within Sensitive Areas
Clearing or encroachment into areas established as critical or sensitive areas are strictly prohibited. Examples of critical or sensitive areas are: adjacent areas to streams, green belts, Native Growth Areas, lakes, ponds, wetlands.
Building or Construction without a Permit
A building permit is required for various projects including but not limited to the construction of any structure over 200 square feet, additions, alterations, re-roofing, new buildings or structures, and changes in use.
Junk Vehicles
A junk vehicle is a vehicle that meets at least three of the following conditions: is at least three years old, is extensively damaged, is apparently inoperable, and has an approximate fair market value equal only to the approximate value of the scrap in it.
Recreational Vehicles (RVs) and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) as Dwelling Units
Recreational vehicles cannot be used for residential or commercial purposes, except temporarily during emergencies or construction. Visitors can occupy them in residential zones for up to seven days within a 45-day period. They cannot park overnight on public streets or have sewer connections, and spaces cannot be rented for staying in them.
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU) require prior approval and must adhere to specific criteria prior to construction. Building Permits are required to ensure the structure complies with all code requirements. Please contact the Community & Economic Development Department for more information on RV's and ADU's within city limits.
Vehicle Parking
Vehicles shall not be parked in front yards, or in a manner that they obstruct the right-of-way. Trailers, campers, dump trucks, semi-trucks, and boats shall not be parked on streets.
Vehicle Repairs
All vehicle repairs (not including simple maintenance) shall be performed within an enclosed permanent structure or garage. The use of portable structures for this (tarp style) for this use is prohibited.
