188th Street Roundabout
Project Description
The City and community have been working on the Smokey Point Blvd Corridor project for several years, we are now ready to start constructing the corridor improvements. The first project will be the construction of a roundabout at 188th St and Smokey Point Blvd. The roundabout will improve vehicle safety and mobility through the intersection. Additional benefits include improved pedestrian crosswalks, street lighting, a multi-use trail, transit stops, landscaping and local artwork to enhance this neighborhood gateway.

Project Updates
- August 8, 2023 - Roundabout design is progressing, we are currently at 60%. Staff is working with utilities to underground overhead wires.
- July 3, 2025 - Project out to bid.
- August 28, 2025 - Re-Bid Opening
- September 15, 2025 - Project awarded to SRV Construction.
- October 24, 2025 - After many years of planning and design, the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project will begin construction in the coming weeks. This project is the first project of the larger Smokey Point Blvd Corridor Improvements.
- November 14, 2025 - The Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project will begin construction on December 1st. Prior to the start of construction survey work will be completed in the area. This project includes the construction of a roundabout at the Smokey Point Blvd and 188th St intersection, improvements to city owned utilities, installation of sidewalks and multi-use trail, pedestrian crosswalks, street lighting, transit stops, landscaping and local artwork to enhance this neighborhood gateway. The completed project will provide for the controlled and safe movement of pedestrians, vehicles and bicycles through the intersection. This project will be constructed in phases; each phase will have roadway section closures with designated detour routes. The utility phase of this project will be constructed first and will require single lane closures with flaggers to control traffic. No detour routes are scheduled to be in place during this phase of work.
- November 21, 2025 - The Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project will begin construction on December 1st. Survey work will be completed next week prior to the start of the project. This project includes the construction of a roundabout at the Smokey Point Blvd and 188th St intersection, improvements to city owned utilities, installation of sidewalks and multi-use trail, pedestrian crosswalks, street lighting, landscaping and local artwork to enhance this neighborhood gateway. The completed project will provide for the controlled and safe movement of pedestrians, vehicles and bicycles through the intersection. - November 26, 2025 - The Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project will begin construction on Monday, December 1stwith the utility improvements phase. This phase is estimated to be complete by the first part of January. Construction is scheduled to occur Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Work will include mobilization, traffic control set up, erosion control, clearing and grubbing, and installation of sewer line improvements. This project will be constructed in phases; each phase will have roadway section closures with designated detour routes or single lane closures with flaggers to control traffic. The utility phase of this project will require single lane closures with flaggers to control traffic. No detour routes are scheduled to be in place during this phase of work.
- December 5, 2025 - The Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project began construction on Monday, December 1st with the utility improvements phase. This phase is estimated to be complete in January. Construction occurred Monday – Friday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Work included mobilization, traffic control set up, erosion control, and clearing and grubbing. Next week work is scheduled to continue Monday-Friday and will include continued clearing and grubbing and potholing for utilities.
- December 12, 2025 - The Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout continued this week with clearing and grubbing. Due to the recent flooding, the contractor had to pull his crew to help with flood areas in Skagit County. Next week work is expected to be sporadic as the contractor deals with the cleanup from the flood.
- December 19, 2025 - No work occurred this week on the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project due to the recent flooding. No work is expected to occur the next two weeks for the holidays. The project is scheduled to resume on January 5th.
- January 2, 2026 - No work occurred during the holidays. No work is scheduled to occur next week while the contractor awaits arrival of materials.
- January 9, 2026 - No work is schedule to occur on the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project until the arrival of long lead material items. These items are estimated to arrive the week of January 19th.
- January 15, 2026 - No work is scheduled to occur on the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project until the arrival of long lead material items. These items are now estimated to arrive late next week with work scheduled to resume on Monday, January 26.
- January 23, 2026 - Work will resume on the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project on Monday, February 2nd. Due to an unforeseen underground utility conflict, the sewer main replacement needs to be realigned and extended approximately 1,000 feet north of the original project limits to the 19100 block of Smokey Point Blvd. Due to the size of the machinery and the location of the sewer main, a required road closure north of 188th St will be required to complete this work. This road closure is estimated to be completed in 3 - 4 weeks from the start date. The contractor will begin at the new north project limits and move south. When construction resumes, please use the designated detour route when traveling in this area. Local and business access will be allowed at all times during this phase, however, please expect short delays if traveling in the work area. No thru traffic will be allowed. The designated detour route is not a truck route. All trucks will need to use designated truck routes during construction.
- January 29, 2026 - The contractor was able to complete saw cutting this week in anticipation of the road closure that is scheduled to begin on Monday, February 2nd for the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project. Smokey Point Blvd will be closed north of 188th St to the 19100 block of Smokey Point Blvd. This road closure is estimated to be completed in 3 - 4 weeks from the start date. The contractor will begin at the north project limits and move south to the 188thSt intersection. Construction is scheduled to occur Monday - Thursday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM and will include mobilization, traffic control set up, and installation of the new 18” sewer main. Beginning Monday, please use the designated detour route when traveling in this area.
- February 6, 2026 - The phase one utility closure began on Monday, February 2nd for the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project. Smokey Point Blvd is closed north of 188th St to the 19100 block of Smokey Point Blvd. This road closure is estimated to be completed in 3 - 4 weeks from the start date. This week the contractor began at the north project limits with excavation and the installation of the new sewer main. Next week construction is scheduled to occur Monday - Thursday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM with continued installation of the new 18” sewer main. Please use the designated detour route when traveling in this area.
- February 20, 2026 - This week the Smokey Point Blvd/188th St Roundabout project continued Tuesday through Friday with road demolition and excavation along with the installation of the new sewer main. Next week construction is scheduled to occur Monday –Thursday between the hours of 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM. Work will include continued installation of the new 18” sewer main, road demolition and excavation, installation of the new water main, and tie-in of the new sewer main to the sanitary sewer lift station. Please continue to use the designated detour route when traveling in this area.
